How we are affected by the places we've been and the characters we have met is the premise of this book. I believe that we are part and parcel of everyone we've ever met and all the places we've ever been.
My character, I believe, started with the seeds of genetics but a much larger impact was made by the characters that I have rubbed shoulders with. Most times, I was enriched tremendously by those characters and sometimes, I was just contaminated. Still I know of now other forces that affected me more. May it ever be so!
"Dad is perhaps the biggest character of all! His many encounters with unusual personalities has indeed rubbed off on him to make him the character he is today."--Ray's daughter Kathy, Olympia
Excerpt from page 62:
"Sven's job was to do the cooking in this arrangement. He said he could cook and as I could barely boil water, I thought it to be a good idea. My job was to do any cleaning and the dishes. I began to wonder if it was a good choice though when one day Sven brought home a 'capizoni' which he had bought from a commercial fisherman. A capizoni is a salt water fish that he had purchased at the dock, A capizoni has a huge head with whiskers, looking very much like and even uglier than a catfish, even a 'bullhead' looks better than a capizoni. This one was about 16 inches long and weighed about 5 pounds. This was the ugliest fish I had ever seen. I could barely look at the thing and now I couldn't believe that Sven expected me to eat it. I'll get through it somehow, I thought, maybe I can eat it with my eyes closed. I was in for another surprise. The first thing Sven prepared was the fish head. You can imagine my surprise to walk up and stare down into that pot and see that ugly brown fish head staring back at me with a rather lop-sided toothless grin, its bulging eyeballs staring back at me like the dead fish it was. "You've never eaten anything really good until you've eaten fishhead stew," Sven said as he poured on the salt herbs and spices. "Ya, it's wary good, Yumpin' Yiminy!"
"I'll never be able to close my eyes tight enough to eat any of that thing", I said. I was really having a hard time just to keep from gagging up my lunch. The next big surprise I got, was to see that the first thing Sven ate was the eyeballs. "Yumpin' Yiminy! This is food for the gods," he said, smacking his lips in pleasure. I found something else to eat, alone, as the sight was hard to witness."
