Cleaning My Desk

Well, I finally cleaned my desk this morning. Haven’t seen it for a long time but I knew it was hiding under that pile someplace. I didn’t really get around to all of it, just the top. Well not all of the top but most of it anyway. Seeing the top of that thing after so long was like finding an old friend that had been gone a long time. There’s still a lot of dust on the desk but it sure looks better than it did when I started. At least now I have a place to put my skinny elbows.
Where does all that stuff come from that we save to look at another day anyway? And where should it go? Where do I put those catalogs? Where do I stash those papers, lest I just make another mess? Should I keep this? That? Or the other? Where do I keep these books that I’ve had for fifteen years that I intended to read someday?
I did find one thing that I know I’ll have to deal with right away, a renewal notice for my equipment trailer, now past due. Better take care of that right away if I intend to use the trailer one of these days. The Governor frowns on those late renewals; might even charge me a late fee. I’ll send him a check in the morning and hope for the best.
It was easy to figure out what to do with some of the stuff, the old newspapers, and the scraps of paper from the paper-cutter. The paper picnic plate, (I have no idea how that got in here) they could all go in the trash. The old newsletters likewise and that junk mail.
I figured out what to do with some of the other stuff too. I dumped it in a pile in another room for my wife to figure out what to do with it. If I had figured that out first instead of last, no doubt I would have dumped it all in there. Have to be careful how I do that though. I have to pretend that I need her expertise in filing and just give her a little bit at a time. Don’t want to stretch my luck too far.
It certainly wouldn’t be hard to figure out what to do if I won the Lottery. I would just hire someone to follow me around all day to clean up my messes. Would that be cool, or what? I’d just go around making messes on purpose then, just for the fun of it.
I’m really glad I finally got around to cleaning my desk, at least the top of it. It was sort of like renewing an old friendship of some one I hadn’t seen in a long time. At my age one has to be careful about such things, leave that pile of junk on the desk too long, might forget the desk might be under there. It would be tragic and expensive too, to go out and buy a new one and then find out I already had one. Besides where would I put it, this room is too small as it is.
